F‑1 Student Visas

F‑1 Student & F‑2 Dependent Visas

The F‑1 Student Visa allows international students to enter the United States to pursue full‑time academic studies at an accredited school, college, university, or approved program. F‑1 status may be obtained through consular visa processing abroad or, when eligible, through a change of status (COS) within the United States. Because F‑1 is a purpose‑specific and compliance‑driven nonimmigrant status, students must carefully follow immigration rules throughout their studies.

F‑1 Student Visa Requirements

To maintain lawful F‑1 status, students must remain continuously enrolled full‑time, make normal academic progress, and ensure their Form I‑20 and SEVIS record are accurate and up to date. Any changes in address, school, academic program, or enrollment must be properly reported. Falling below full‑time enrollment or failing to maintain valid documentation can result in loss of status.

Employment Restrictions and Authorized Work

F‑1 students are not permitted to work freely in the United States. Employment is allowed only when specifically authorized under immigration regulations. Limited on‑campus employment, Curricular Practical Training (CPT), and Optional Practical Training (OPT) are permitted only when eligibility requirements are met and proper authorization is obtained in advance. Unauthorized employment or “side jobs” of any kind—paid or unpaid—can result in immediate termination of F‑1 status and may negatively affect future immigration benefits.

F‑2 Dependents: Spouses and Children

F‑1 students may be accompanied by dependents in F‑2 status, including a spouse and unmarried children under 21.

  • F‑2 spouses are not authorized to work in the United States under any circumstances.

  • F‑2 spouses may engage in part‑time study, but must change to F‑1 status to pursue a full‑time degree program.

  • F‑2 children under 21 may attend school full‑time, including K–12 education, and may also attend post‑secondary institutions where permitted.

The lawful status of F‑2 dependents is directly tied to the F‑1 student maintaining valid status at all times.

The Importance of Compliance

F‑1 and F‑2 visas are strictly regulated. Even minor violations—such as unauthorized work, failure to maintain full‑time enrollment, or unreported changes—can lead to SEVIS termination, loss of lawful presence, and long‑term immigration consequences for both the student and their family. Compliance is essential not only to remain in the United States lawfully, but also to preserve eligibility for future options such as OPT, employment‑based visas, or permanent residence.
